New Free Pipe Heat Loss Calculator

Mattair’s Technical Sales Director, Ian Fisher F.Inst.R, has been working alongside fellow Institute of Refrigeration (IOR) member Lawrence Leask FInstR to develop a new free pipe heat loss calculator.

The calculator has been highlighted by the Institute of Refrigeration as a practical resource for the industry and is available free to use through the WattsWatt website.

Putting a Cost on Pipe Heat Loss

Poorly insulated pipework can result in unnecessary heat loss and wasted energy, but communicating the financial impact of those losses to end-users is not always straightforward.

The new calculator helps address this by providing a clear projection of the potential financial implications of heat loss through pipework.

Users can enter information including pipe size and length, insulation thickness and condition, water and outdoor temperatures, energy costs and annual running hours.

The results provide an estimate of annual energy loss and associated costs, helping to put the impact of inadequate pipe insulation into clear and understandable terms.

Supporting Better-Informed Decisions

By translating heat loss into a tangible financial figure, the calculator can help engineers and other industry professionals demonstrate the importance of effective pipe insulation and support more informed conversations with end-users.
