Close control systems, also known as precision air conditioning systems or environmental control systems, are specialised HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems designed to maintain precise and stable environmental conditions within critical spaces such as data centres, laboratories, server rooms, cleanrooms and medical facilities. These systems are engineered to regulate temperature, humidity, airflow and air quality with a high degree of accuracy and reliability.
Below, we’ve outlined the essential components and features of close control systems:

Components and Features
Temperature Control:
Close control systems maintain strict temperature control within specified tolerances, crucial for sensitive equipment and processes requiring stable operating conditions – usually to +/- 1°c or even 0.5 °c.
Humidity Control:
Precise humidity control is vital in environments where moisture levels can affect equipment performance or product quality. Close control systems incorporate humidification and dehumidification to maintain optimal humidity levels.
Air Filtration:
These systems feature advanced filtration mechanisms to remove airborne contaminants such as dust, pollen and microorganisms. High-efficiency filters ensure that the air circulated within the controlled space is clean and free of impurities.
Airflow Management:
These systems deliver consistent airflow patterns to distribute conditioned air evenly and maintain uniform environmental conditions.
Redundancy and Backup Systems:
Close control systems incorporate redundant components to ensure continuous operation and minimise downtime in the event of equipment failure.
Remote Monitoring and Control:
Modern systems enable remote monitoring and management for owners and building managers to adjust settings and receive notifications remotely.
Energy Efficiency:
Close control systems are designed with energy efficiency in mind, utilising variable speed drives, energy recovery systems and other technologies to optimise energy consumption while maintaining precise environmental control.
Our Expertise - Can We Help?
In a recent project, we were tasked with designing a close control system to regulate the temperature and humidity of a new microscope room. The challenge lay in the necessity for reduced airflow over the microscope, which limited air movement. Our solution involved designing a two-stage cooling system with humidity control, as well as a standalone control package. The installation was highly successful, maintaining the temperature within 0.15 degrees of the setpoint.
At Mattair, we understand the critical importance of close control systems in ensuring the reliability, performance and longevity of equipment and processes in mission critical environments.
