Swimming Pool Air Handling Unit Refurbishment – Leisure Centre Birmingham

We’re pleased to share details of a recent swimming pool air handling unit refurbishment our team completed at a leisure centre in Birmingham.

The site’s swimming pool AHU was showing signs of age and inefficiency — but instead of a costly full replacement, we delivered a smart, sustainable refurbishment that extended the unit’s life and significantly boosted performance.

Swimming pool environments are particularly demanding due to high humidity levels and the need for constant air movement to maintain comfort and air quality for visitors. Over time, wear and tear can reduce the performance of AHUs, leading to increased energy use and potential system failures.

Project Overview

The existing unit at the leisure centre was no longer operating efficiently. Rather than replacing the entire system, we proposed a cost-effective refurbishment, upgrading critical components to improve performance and extend the lifespan of the equipment.

Key improvements included:

• ✅ Replacement of the bulkhead: We installed a new, durable bulkhead to improve airflow control and structural integrity within the unit.
• ✅ Internal refurbishment: The interior of the AHU was fully cleaned, treated, and restored to improve performance and reduce the risk of corrosion.
• ✅ Installation of fan guards: To ensure ongoing health and safety compliance, fan guards were added inside the AHU to protect maintenance personnel and prevent accidental contact.

Results

The refurbishment has delivered a more reliable, energy-efficient, and safer air handling system, ensuring the leisure centre can maintain a comfortable, controlled environment around the pool area.
